The following lectures look at the history of Britain during the period from the end of the 1940s to the late 1980s, known historically as the Cold War. The latter was a confrontation between the West, led by the USA, and the Communist states of the Soviet bloc, led by the Soviet Union. Because Britain definitely took the back seat in this confrontation, the lectures largely cover the themes that are directly related to Britain such as the economic paranoia that followed the end of WWII, the Iron Curtain, the Marshall Plan, the threat of nuclear annihilation, the Suez Canal Crisis, Thatcherism, etc.
Cold War Britain is not concerned only with high politics, diplomacy, and military affairs. The big theme of that era is the defeat of politics by consumerism. Undoubtedly then, the lectrures deal with the cultural, social, and economic dimensions of the Cold War. They identify key cultural components of the Cold War. These include religion, social movements, music, and literature.
